MISOGI - NEXT EVENT: FEBRUARY 20-21, 2010

misogi"Misogi is a purification practice of the shintoist tradition and it has been secretly handed down since the Edo period (1603-1868). It was prohibited during the Tokugawa era, for its efficaciousness in developing the willpower in the person practicing it and was therefore difficult for the authorities to control. It was a particularly hard and demanding practice that involved strongly motivated people who were somewhat outside the path. Tesshu Yamaoka ,famous samurai and teacher of sword of the XIX century, formalized this practice for his disciple Tetsuju Ogura who spread it through his association the Ichikukai which has residence in Nakano, Tokyo.

The concept of misogi was originally to rely on the purifying strength of the elements of nature. The preference was to plunge into the water of a mountain stream or meditating under its waterfalls. In fact the best place to practice misogi is in contact with the elements of nature, especially the mountain, the water.
In our school, we teach and practice misogi breathing without its more rigid aspects and without any religious connotations. We consider misogi as a practice to stimulate the body and to strengthen the will, through respiration and vocalization exercises, and when possible through contact with nature.t is a practice of interior purification because it brings us to confront ourselves with our body, mind and spirit, setting us free from all the forces that block us and awakening the consciousness of the self."
